Create, analyse and criticise the texts of today and yesterday Our image of who we are as Australians living in today’s society is affected by the media we encounter, the books and articles we read, the web sites we visit and what we hear and see on the screen, radio and in every day texts. What effect do the representations in these texts have on people? What attitudes do they display about youth or Australians or the roles of men and women in our own and other societies? Do they promote or endorse certain values? Do they shape or influence readers’ own attitudes and beliefs? For instance, do texts influence us to see certain behaviours as heroic and other behaviours as unworthy? In Senior English students will learn to answer these questions as they analyse and look critically at a wide range of literature and media texts. They will also create their own texts, such as short stories, editorials, monologues, persuasive speeches, proposals and feature articles. In these, students will present their own representations of young people, Australians in general, the marginalized of our society and a range of social issues. Students will read, listen, view, speak and write as they become a mature language users, analysts and critics. We hope they enjoy the challenge! |
