Through science education, students are encouraged to develop critical and creative thinking skills as well as scientific knowledge and understanding to assist in making informed decisions about local, national and global issues.
Year 7 to 10
In year 7 to 10, Coorparoo Secondary College is implementing the Australian Curriculum for science. The three interrelated strands that are covered include:
- science understanding
- science as a human endeavour
- science inquiry skills
The four sub-strands of science understanding are:
- Biological sciences
- Chemical sciences
- Earth and space sciences
- Physical sciences
Year 11 and 12
Biology
Biology is the study of the natural systems of the living world. It is characterised by a view of life as a unique phenomenon with fundamental unity. Biology encourages the development of knowledge and skills through a variety of learning experiences including practical experience, planned research and investigation tasks.
Chemistry
In senior chemistry, the students pursue the understanding of fundamental chemical phenomena in both the laboratory and classroom. Chemistry encourages the development of knowledge and skills through a variety of learning experiences including practical experience, planned research and investigative tasks.
Earth and Environmental Science
In Earth and Environmental Science, students explore the dynamic interactions in and between four systems: geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. Earth and Environmental Science encourages students to learn and apply thinking, experimentation, problem-solving and research skills as well as understood how it works and impacts society.
Physics
The study of physics provides students with the means of enhancing their understanding of the world around them, a way of achieving useful knowledge and skills and a stepping-stone for further study. Key concepts and key ideas are organised under the headings of forces, energy and motion.
